A CONTRACT WRITTEN IN FILM GRAIN

We’re not here to fit into the industry.
We’re here to build a space for film that feels alive – handmade, human, and honest.
Screen 13 is a gathering, not a brand; a community, not a company.
This Playbook is a working document – one we’ll keep revising together

CINEMA FOR THE PEOPLE, NOT THE CORPORATIONS.

Cinema should belong to audiences and artists, not marketing departments. We’ll keep Screen 13 small enough to care and open enough to matter. Every choice we make will serve the stories and the people watching them.

CULTURE STARTS AT STREET LEVEL.

We’ll choose independent filmmakers, suppliers, and collaborators whenever we can. Our money and energy go to the people who make things, not the ones who own things. The heart of cinema beats on backstreets, not boardrooms.

COLLABORATION OVER EXPLOITATION.

We’ll build Screen 13 alongside the people who believe in it. Every project should help everyone involved - whether that means shared credit, exposure, or growth. Collaboration here means genuine exchange, never extraction.

“I’m gonna make something even if it kills me.”

Ed Wood - Ed Wood (1994)

“Normal is an illusion. What is normal for the spider is chaos for the fly.”

Morticia Addams - The Addams Family (1991)

“We can’t wait for someone to build it for us. We have to build it ourselves.”

Jerry - Be Kind Rewind (2008)

WE REJECT GATEKEEPING.

Film has no hierarchy. If it’s made with heart, it has a home here. We’ll show arthouse next to grindhouse, classics beside chaos, and treat every story with the same respect.

DIY OR DIE.

We’ll paint the walls, run the cables, and make it work. Doing it ourselves means we stay close to the craft and accountable for every choice. What we build with our own hands carries our fingerprints - imperfect, but real.

MADE WITH, NOT FOR.

We’ll keep listening to the people who show up. Programming, ideas, and improvements come from real conversations - not committees. Screen 13 will always be shaped by the crowd, not controlled by it.

“Self-expression is the enemy of repression.”

Hedwig Robinson - Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001)

“This is our time down here.”

Mikey Walsh - The Goonies (1985)

“We are the weirdos, mister.”

Nancy Downs - The Craft (1996)

STAY TRANSPARENT. STAY TRUE.

We’ll keep our funding, decisions, and partnerships open to public view. We’ll only work with people and projects that align with our values. Integrity isn’t a slogan here - it’s our baseline.

EVERYONE’S WELCOME.

Screen 13 is an 18+ space, but we’ll make sure everyone who can join us feels included and respected. We’ll make the venue physically, financially, and socially accessible. We’ll keep ticket prices fair and events welcoming. If someone’s being left out, we’ll change how we do things until they’re not.

GIVE THE MIC TO THE UNHEARD.

We’ll make space for filmmakers and voices that deserve light. Our pre-rolls, short slots, and features will highlight new, local, and global creators. Every screening is a chance to pass the spotlight, not keep it.

“Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary.”

John Keating - Dead Poets Society (1989)

“We are the sum of every story we’ve ever told.”

Alfredo - Cinema Paradiso (1988)

"True rebellion means being yourself."

Steveo - SLC Punk! (1998)

IF NO ONE GIVES YOU A SPACE, MAKE ONE.

This isn’t a brand promise – it’s a public commitment.
If we drift, tell us.
We’ll listen, adjust, and keep moving forward.
Honesty matters more than polish.
We’ll stay open, stay grounded, and stay accountable.

Apparently we had reached a great height in the atmosphere, for the sky was a dead black, and the stars had ceased.
